there is SO much variation with stereo install jobs and equipment used that there is no ONE best setup. everyone has such different needs from their systems and their cars that picking one best way for everyone to do the job is pretty much impossible.

post up some more information- what you use the car for,how big a stereo you want,do you need the boot to remain functional, what's your price range, etc. and maybe you will get some useful info in return.

well i have a kenwood deck, 6x4's at front(clarion), 6inch, at the rear, fusion 4channel amp, and fusion 12inch sub, with custom box.
Thats my set up i am not much of a bass person but i got the sub for better sounds, overall its ok i guess as i said not heaps of bass but has decent sound quality.

ALERT - dont buy sony, i heard all sony car audio will be runout in under 2 years, supposedly not cutting it LOL :)

if i'm bothered and can find the pics, i'll post up the 4 or 5 different boot setups i had in my 180 from a few years ago.. ranges from a single 12" sub to three 10" square solobarics to two 15" soundstream SPL's.. various amp/cabling combos too.. was lots of fun, and loud..... and heavy and a waste of space!

i done a few different set ups aswell back with my old car and with this one, alot similar to what you meantioned but in the end i agree me personally would rather just a basic set up you dont want to anchor your car :D

the box i had in one of my previous cars weighed nearly 90kg on its own.. not including the subs, amps, capacitors and cabling..

it was like having two passengers in my boot when everything was installed. bit silly really when i think back to it.

but then again, i did get 148db in a coupe (old MX6) - and over 150db in my sister's mirage (got the trophy to prove it! hehe)
