Earth attached properly? 12v acc going in?

WELL, when i bought the silvia the headunit was taken out, but not properly. Many wires were butchered by the previous owner in the process. Today, I finally found the time to wire in the headunit [the one that the previous owner used]. The antenna line was totally butchered, so there was no way I was going to get reception today. The power lines, constant, accessory and grounding cables were bodged, so I decided to re-do them through splicing into the ignition barrel lines. I got some random 6inch speakers and connected them up. After 30minutes everything was set. I turned the car on, put a 2pac cd in and everything was working well. Headunit had power, speakers were working as they should. I popped the headunit into the centre console hole, turned the car on to check to see that the headunit was still working... but.. IT WASN'T ! No explosions, no sparks prior to being defunct. I tested power going into the headunit, and it was all sweet, but the headunit wasn't doing anything. IM STUMPED!!! does anyone have any ideas???? Headunit is a pioneer DEH P5450. Car is an s13. |

yea, test light shows that 12v acc has power going in. Also guess that means it's grounded somehow. |

This would be true if you are grouding the test light to the headunit chassis. If your grouding elsewhere, it just means theres power going through that particular wire. Make sure non of the other speaker cables are shorting out (rears maybe). Try for a nice solid ground near the headunit (I used the screw that holds the rubber boot for the gearstick) make sure you go over contact patches with some sandpaper or steel wool as they are usually a bit rusty. Also, you need to check both constant and acc wires. Hope this helps. |

After reading your post, I ran out to the car with a 3cm^2 piece of sandpaper and sanded the living hell out of the contact patch. and what'd you know! ITS ALIVE AGAIN!.. thanks Deluxe! |

I was going to say the problem was the 2pac cd. 
the gear boot surround isn't the best earth as it's only attached by four screws,and doesn't touch the body itself,plus you'll be disconnecting your stereo everytime you take the gearbox out. granted,that's uncommon for most people but why add an extra step for yourself,when there are better,easier options available that you'll never have to touch again? personally, I use the studs that support the centre console brackets,or the dash's main cross bracing for earthing electrical gear. Justin... Actually, the gear boot surround sits on a metal plate that gets screwed into the top of the tunnel. I crimped a ring on works a treat. If it didn't touch the body itself it wouldn't have earth. The main cross brace is a round bar, pretty far in (a bit too far to tap in a hole with a drill). But yes, there are better places. |

Most Headunits require the antenna cable to be connected to make the headunit work. Try that. |

i did the exact same thing on mine, and the earth kept going gay on me so i ended up running a powerline fromt he battery and the ground into what looks like some bare metal under the footwells works perfect now |

dont ever wire into vital looms. ie ign barrell and wiper stalks ... use the factory stereo loom for all aftermarket stuff.. if theres a problem, it doesnt mess up all ur other shit.. |
