Post subject:  Recomendations for head unit

Im going to look into buying a head unit for my s15 soon and was wanting to know a couple of things. Im looking to spend around $500-$600 and hopefully get a good discount.

1) Which brands/model would people recommend, or is it just a personal preference thing?

2) Is it safe to buy from ebay or is there copies floating around of stereos too?

Cheers,

Michael...

Hi Michael

there are a few good brands to consider.

do you want something that looks fancy or something with good sound quality and good features.

my old head unit was fancy but also had good features but it set me back 1500.

brands that you should look out for are:
Alpine( proved to be one of the best many times)
Clarion( but you will have to buy something in the top end)
Eclipse( very good but kill your wallet)
Nakamichi(not sure how to spell it, these are one of teh best ead units i have come across, so many features that you would neva think about ut will also kill your wallet and you back balance)

i have bought head unit of ebay but make sure you buy it new with warranty and check the usual ebay crap(seller info stuff).

Sound quality is the most important part, it should look pretty good though.

I pretty much want to build a good quality system with subs, amps etc and im starting off from the head unit.

well for what you want to spend, i think you should go for something like alpine. Eclipse and Nakamichi must cost too much

between clarion and alpine, they are pretty close but alpine has a few more features and i personally think the alpine looks good.

here are a few alpine onesi would look at.

1. CDA-9857 iPod Full Speed CD / MP3 / WMA Receiver

2. CDA-9853R Bass Engine Pro CD / MP3 / WMA Receiver / Changer Controller

3. CDA-9855R Bass Engine Pro CD / MP3 / WMA Receiver / Changer Controller(might be out of your price range-power of bargaining)

Dont forget to add Pioneer to that list of head units, they have some very simple entry level units, but theyr higher end stuff is exceptional quality, and definately very nice.

I am currently running a Pioneer DEH 8450mp in my car, has 3 RCA outputs, so front and rear speakers are on 1 Amp, the subwoofer is on the other, and the sound quality is awesome.

Also, I blew my BOSS Amp for the Sub, and when tuned right, it was almost not known, as the head unit was able to push clear and consistent mid and low range to the speakers to still sound exceptional without the Low end bass (you just couldn't feel the bass).

very true, pioneer make great head units but you would have to look at teh top end ones ot get the same features as a alpine mid level head unit.
