Hey all.

Thinking about putting a subwoofer in my car.

I'm after a nice subwoofer that is affordable.

I was thinking maybe:

Alpine Type R: Either a 10" or a 12"

What are the pros and cons of each size?

I'm after nice crisp sound.

Cameron.

the bigger sub is usally better for clear bass notes, ie RnB rap etc. Smaller is usually better for busier music, metal, rock, etc

Bigger the box the deeper the sound. smaller = tighter bass

My understanding is that larger cones provide more volume, the greater the excursion and the higher the resistance the better the fidelity.

what kinda music do you listen to? and whats the budget?

have a look at brands that aren't the mainstream as well. JL audio, etc are great subs that are often over looked cause you can't buy them from every shop out there.

thats pretty much it. the more volume the sub can move the louder it is, so you calculate surface area and multiply by excursion both ways, and you get the max volume the sub can move

all things equal (same brand and range sub for example), a 15" sub will be louder then 2x 10"s. we will assume excursion will be same so:

2x10" subs = 5" radius^2 x pi x 2 = 157"^2 surface area

1x 15" sub = 7.5" radius^2 x pi = 176"^2 surface area

then multiply by excursion and it gives you something to compare different subs and brands

all things equal, a larger diameter sub is more efficient, and will have a higher sensitivity in its specs. in the same range and brand of subs, the sensitivity will increase as you go up in size

personally ive never liked alpine subs at all. im running a 12" cerwin vega at the moment

imo 10" are usually too small and 15" only if your really into alot bass
yes i like 12"s :)

A 15" subwoofer in a micra? LOL. It'd be bigger then the mags i have on the car! :o Would it fit? :P

But seriously,

Music... Well I listen to anything... After the fall type music, and then also Groove Coverage and techno...

So i listen to a whole range of music... lol.

Maybe a 10" and a 12"? :P

Nah not really. I think i will probally go with a single 12" JL Audio sub. Been talking to my sister's boyfriend (He loves subwoofers and anything to do with them!) And he reccommended JL Audio... So will see it goes...

The budget was going to be roughly $800 for the Subwoofer and amplifier... But the Hi-Flowed and Ported head I was going to buy, is still for sale! Engine mods before Stereo ANY day.

Will post to tell yous how i go, with the head and the audio system once i get it.

Cameron.

good choice, they are VERY good subs indeed

make sure you dont skimp on the amp though, the subs only half the job

Will do. When i get around to doing the stereo, i'll ask more specific questions about the sub and amp...

Won't be for a good while though, lol.

Same here.

I'm going to upgrade the stereo sub after installing a new LSD, but I'm restricting myself to a 10" sub so it'll fit the factory enclosure.

I'll be quite interested to see what brands people suggest at that point.

True story about the amp. I have a 12"MTX sub (forget the wattage, maybe 500).
It was running of a BOSS "1000 Watt" amp, 1000 watts my ass. I bought it cause it was nice and shiny. Big mistake.

I exchanged it for a Kenwood 600 Watt and it sounded TWICE as good. Get a good amp, its well worth it. The amp was the most expensive component in my system.
