Post subject:  Insurance - Caveats

Found a nice editorial on Drive regarding insurance, and what you should look out for.

Quote:
Thankfully, crashes involving uninsured vehicles are not too frequent - and you've got comprehensive insurance, right? The dictionary may define comprehensive as "complete coverage", but it more closely resembles a carefully crafted blanket of Swiss cheese.

Are your tyres bald? Or maybe you're driving a few kilometres over the speed limit. Had one or two drinks at a family barbecue, could be over 0.05 but should be fine to drive? Scary fact two: Car insurance doesn't cover you if you break the law or your car is not roadworthy, even if the crash wasn't your fault. That last one's a double whammy for Victoria, which - unlike some states, including NSW - does not have compulsory annual roadworthy checks and does little to ensure cars are roadworthy. Victorians are only required to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy when selling, so if the average Victorian replaces their car every seven years, when was the last time it was given a once-over? Technically, a blown brake bulb is enough to void some insurance contracts.

Makes for a pretty good read. The thought of paying for yours and someone else's damage is reason enough to get it, but looking at how insurance companies worm their way out of paying claims on irrelevant technicalities makes you wonder why you'd bother.

I've always said insurance companies are c*%ts. I may as well be flushing 2200 bucks a year down the toilet as i know i'm going to get screwed if i have an at fault acco.

Thats a little bit of a stirred up storm in a teacup, isn't it?

it'd have to be a hell of a fine print section to wrangle those sort of clauses...

The insurance is null and void if its directly tieable to a criminal infraction (DUI over 0.07 at the scene i think is where they start for general road users). All the general infraction stuff (roadworthyness/defects/speeding) will not often halt a claim.

Famous are pretty good with this kinda thing, they have a clause saying they won't pay if the car is unroadworthy, only if the part of the car that is unroadworth contributed to the accident.

insurance is a fun topic. make sure you read the policy schedule FULLY before you pay your premium and ask every conceivable question related to the policy when you enquire about it in the beginning.

failure to disclose a traffic fine you received during the insured period can be seen as a reason to dis-allow a claim... make sure you tell them EVERYTHING,or you've just wasted your premium.
