Mine have been mounted on like 3/4 inch think mdf, thus it would allow for a speaker with more depth. With step 3 there you risk breaking somthing, After you have got the screw out of the tray, and that cap one, just try and pull the trim off, then hold the lever out and slide the cover off, do it with your fingers.

older topic I know, but the question was never answered and I'm about to put some splits in my doors. Do people know what thickness mdf you can get behind the factory grills, and then, what depth magnet will fit without hitting the window?

Can't say I measured it, but I used fairly thin mdf when fitting 6.5" splits in the old S13. They must have been at least 80mm deep, but possibly even up to 100mm I think, it's hard to remember. But anyway I think you will be more likely to have problems with speaker diameter than depth.

I actually mounted the crossovers in the doors too without too much trouble. The two bolts in the centre on the left are holding the crossover to the mdf, with spacers on the other side so the crossover slides tight against the other side of the door panel. I did have to grind back the window stopper on one side about 3-4mm though as it hit the crossover cover (I tested on the driver side first and then duplicated it on the passenger side - turns out the driver side window stopper was already ground down for some reason :-?).

put your window all the way down and stick a ruler in the hole...

i think its around 70mm clearance from flush, so with the 6mm MDF we used, would have given a max of around 75mm depth.

Speakers had a depth of 53mm, 12mm MDF and plenty of space left in there.
