Hi, I've just bought a clarion head unit...one of the really basic ones (db246). ive already got kenwood splits at the front and kenwood 6x9s at the back. Now im not really into big stereo but just want a decent systm with some bass. i also got a rockford fosqate 2 channel amp and thought i mite as well make use of it. Im not sure wat would be best to amp, the back or the front? i was thinking of doing the bak so i could get some more bass w/o havin to get a sub, but ive also been told to amp the front coz the splits are good and i should take adv of them. My question is, if i just amp the back and run the front off the unit, will the 6x9s drown out the front?
Cheers in advance.

My advice would be to use the amp for the fronts.

you'll get better imaging if you amplify the front, but better bass is you amplify the 6x9's.

ideally,if you're not adding a sub,you should use a small 4ch amp,and power all the speakers properly.
if you're going to add a sub later, amplify the splits, leave the 6x9's hooked to the head unit for rear fill, and get another amp for the sub.

For the love of mike please don't amp the rears, it'll sound terrible. When you have splits and 6x9s you want the splits to go as loud and clear as possible because 6x9s sound like my arse. If you amp the rears you'll end up with loud (but not particularly good) mid bass, terrible balance and sound quality and your fronts being drowned out by speakers which don't have the capability to sound as good.

thanx for the speedy replies. I think ill do as Justin said, and run everything off a 4 channel amp...that way i can also just wack in a sub if i decide to later. Cheers.

Where are you bro? Audiotech in the ACT are currently selling old stock Clarion 4x100W amps for $200!!!
Best advice I can give you if buying from any of the decent established brands is - if you have the opportunity - buy superceded models. The problem with the quality of car stereo these days is that - in most cases - it's not getting better, it's getting worse. There are exceptions but if you're buying Clarion, Alpine, Panasonic or Blaupunkt etc. then see if they have older models at a discounted price ...that's your best bet.

the fronts cuz the fronts are always suppose to be better than the rears, just because the sound is more directed to you...goodluck anyways man :D

He may have needed luck 4 months ago :P , this link is old

You would amp the fronts to use the full potential of the splits, rears are just there to make noise.

Think of it this way....

When you go to a concert, you dont listen to the sound behind you, so unless your setting up a 5.1 surround system with DVD and screens, you would amp the fronts.

It's a completely different story if your looking at a massive 5.1 in car entertainment system, but for standard 4 speaker and sub setup, you should amp front or both, and if your adding a sub later, lower the ampl to the 6 X 9's, or replace them with 6.5" speakers when the sub goes in, otherwise you will get nasty bass over-lap from the 6 X 9's and sub, and it will sound terrible.

The rear speakers in a 5.1 cinema setup are mostly there for imaging, not to make a hell of alot of noise, so they dont nessercerly need to be amped.

especially when proper imaging dicatates that the sound stage is front dominant.
