what brand is the manifold Michael?

I advise you to start shielding hoses (the breather line springs to mind as it will go very quickly, and cause a fire...),and don't throw your std manifold out. you may need it again in a while.

Glad to see interest in the thread.

The brand is unknown, i bought it from a guy on NJS.com in Queensland who bought it from a place in the states, probably on ebay or something. He reckons they source them from Japan but that is just a guess.

Apparentloy new xforce ones can be had for around $600 new, dunno if it includes new gaskets and studs like mine did though.

Main difference is in the smoothness of power delivery, the turbo spools so quickly and smoothly, it reminded me of the smoothness of my drive of an RB20DET Silvia.

It is definately pulling harder up top, maybe to the tune of 165rwkw as a guess, up from 157rwkw last dyno. Anything over 160 will make me happy for now. I'm expecting heaps more power down low on the dyno too.

Justin being hearing about cracking lately of these manifolds, its making me paranoid, is this what you mean by keep the stock one ready?

How can I preserve this one? I'm sure ample engine running time to let it cool down gradually would help a lot?

A huge thanks to Craig (DRIFTHEAD), he was a champion all day and was the head mechanic on the job for sure.

Oh yeah Tripper the exhaust note is bloody wierd. Every other time ive added exhaust parts its gone deeper and meaner, but now it seems higher and more mellow. Kinda wierd....

Is anyone else besides me and Listen wanting a dyno run one night next week? You can come along with us

Michael,

>Apparentloy new xforce ones can be had for around $600 new, dunno if >it includes new gaskets and studs like mine did though.

you wouldn't want an x force manifold, regardless of the price...

>Main difference is in the smoothness of power delivery, the turbo spools >so quickly and smoothly, it reminded me of the smoothness of my drive >of an RB20DET Silvia.

>It is definately pulling harder up top, maybe to the tune of 165rwkw as a >guess, up from 157rwkw last dyno. Anything over 160 will make me >happy for now. I'm expecting heaps more power down low on the dyno >too.

this is more or less what I hear from everyone who fits extractor-type manifolds to silvias. you'll likely find your mid range has a nice fat increase in torque, and that the boost comes on a good 500rpm earlier, and also more smoothly.
the engine note changes noticeably as well. gone is the gravelly truck engine sound, replaced by a throaty growl...it's wonderful!

>Justin being hearing about cracking lately of these manifolds, its making >me paranoid, is this what you mean by keep the stock one ready?

exactly what I was hinting at. I've seen quite a few crack, from several different manufacturers. one x force one went inside a month.

>How can I preserve this one? I'm sure ample engine running time to let >it cool down gradually would help a lot?

that can't hurt. the biggest problems as I see it with these are the stainless being too thin to take the heat cycling, leading to premature cracking along the pipes, and splitting of joins above and below welds due to excessive flexing.
I would recommend you look into some extra support for the manifold to secure it to the engine as well as you can,an extra hanger or two for the rest of the system to stop it shaking around too much, and putting a flexible join in before the cat.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply mate. :)

ok compared to others it sems to have a fair bit of bracing. Where each runner connects to the flanges there is a brace making 5 in total. There is also a large bolt on brace between the two flanges to help.

My exhaust sytem isa bit rigid, but now the dump seems to be resting against the bell housing a little, and this seems to have stopped the noise and vibration underneath the car I was hearing where the dump was rubbing the chassis rail. Nice little bonus there.

Engine note is definately quite different. Instructor at the creek today commented how good it sounded, which made me chuffed. Fair few passers by also had a decent look.

Will dyno at Unigroup one night this week unless they are booked solid.

being the bargain hunter (or tight ass..) that i am, ive found these on ebay...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33632&item=2448226980

now, these have a reserve of USD$150, which is less than USD$200 with the current exchange rate, so, when u factor in (at an estimate) another USD$50 for shipping, ur looking at around AU$250-$300 DELIVERED for what appears to be a very good quality manifold! they come with new gaskets and bolts/studs, so the whole package is even viable for someone who just wants to change gaskets! might as well replace the manifold when its this cheap!

in the next few months, i think i'll be getting one of these!! and from the pics, it doesnt look too different to michael's one (could even be the same!)

you might want to make sure the manifold sticks in the same position as the old one. a group buy might be an idea too :D
