Post subject:  turbo questions

Hey guys i got a ca18det silvia, and im having some troubles with my T25. My mechanic says it has an oil leak and its not spooling properly. Anyway instead of fucking around with this turbo i was thinking would it be a better idea just to buy a T28 from a 200sx?

Ive heard that no modifications have to be made, and they just bolt straight in, is this true? Cuz i dont want to buy the turbo and find it will be a bitch to fit.

Also if i do fit one, will it make much performance difference as the car is stock, and also will it create any turbo lag being a larger turbo?

Cheers,
Matt.

lag and general behavior is not decided by the physical size of a turbo.
all turbos have an A/R ratio (area/radius) that is used to build turbos using the right compressors/turbines to match the engine.
a slightly larger turbo could have a smaller A/R by design.
basically turbo matching is a very complicated thing but this upgrade will be "don is good"

no experience myself but have heard many times that its a straight swap.

t28 will go STRAIGHT on. On a 2l the upgrade is worth about 30hp alone, so the difference on a 1.8 should be quite substantial. I just happen to have one for sale too! :D

I have to correct the responses here:

The T28 is not a direct bolt on. There is a couple of changes required

One dump pipe bolt needs to be drilled out larger
You need to fabricate a new compressor inlet flange

I think the rest is easy
