Post subject:  What? Another Turbo Thread!

Hey Guys

so i've decided to upgrade a few things before my next tune, simply cause i took it to a tuner not long ago (i wont name) and he just didnt sound like he knew much about 200's...anyways
after doing some reading i've decided to purchase step 1 hks camshafts IN 256Deg and EX 264Deg and 555cc injectors first to see if thats what i want, then get a turbo later
im only really chasing later down the track 230kws max as its mainly street and some fun circuit days. i'm still running the stock s14 turbo and i have z32 afm installed, power fc, avcr, turbo back and front mount.
the turbo that im planning to get later is the hks gt2530 saw them on ns.com for about $1200 but its a garret gt2530 don't know if thats the same one as the HKS.

so wanted to ask you guys is the next step im taking a good step to where im heading to? any suggestions or flaming (if any) im open to your feedback.

BTW - Thanks Fergo and others on the help a few weeks back about the suspension setup and alignment advice, the car has drastically improved in handling, gives me quite a grin when driving now! =D

Cheers.

I reckon you are going about it the right way. You already have a good base of mods and I would be doing exactly the same as you planned if I was in your position.

As for turbos, the HKS gt2530 is an awesome turbo, but can be a little hard to find these days. The 'almost equivalent' turbo from Garrett is the GT2860RS. The specs are almost identical. This turbo can be stretched to 230rwkw and can be found new or secondhand pretty easily.

Other turbo options that would suit your requirements include Garrett GT2871R-48T and Trust T518Z

Check out a xls comparison I prepared earlier which shows power and boost curves for HKS GT2530, HKS GT-RS (2871RG-52T) and Garrett GT2871RS-48T

Thanks tmb!

you've given me invaluable information, and i'm planning to go ahead with what i initially planned to do, (people have actually disagreed at my next step which i find ok, but funnily enough they weren't being very "informative" in why they disagreed...)

awesome graph, that actually gives me much more perspective in terms of the capability of the 3 turbos.

you've been a great help

Cheers!

Hi All,

so i've finally purchased some tomei camshafts stage 1 256 deg in/ex 1.5mm lift and 555cc nismo injectors along with the o-rings and insulators,

wanted to ask if i could install the injectors and camshafts and drive it for lets say about a week before i get it tuned? (or longer as its getting to the Christmas holidays)
by drivable i mean like to work and home about 40min drive in peak hour traffic xD
quite anxious to get these babies installed and tuned

Thanks for the help!

you could install the cams and drive un-tuned, but not the injectors (well, since you have a powerfc you can adjust the injector settings and it'll be close enough for careful driving (set to around 68% assuming they're at 100% now)

Hey All,

so after fixing the issues (s14 not holding boost!) the car is running very well now.

with pretty much all the basic and supporting mods except for a turbo, the car is pulling 210kw atw, asked the tuner if this is normal for a 200 with a standard turbo and was told not really so his quite happy with the tune, been driving for a few days now and the knock levels seem to be quite controllable on redline and fuel consumption is still 'the same' giving me about 450km a full tank.

only thing i noticed was that the car on cold start seems to idle at about 1700 and about 3-4 mins warming up the revs would drop back to normal 900, is that normal? on warm start the car is fine. i was told the cold start idle cannot be made to rev where it wants to, it just does what it does, only warm start he could. :(

will get the dyno sheet up asap!

Thanks all!

there's a mechanical idle-up for cold starts, which is on the bottom of the throttle body.
You can generally remove it and the ECU can control the idle fine from cold.

I think it's mainly there for really cold climates. The S13 engine doesn't have it but the S14 and 15 do.

Thanks Dumhead!

if i remove that mechanical idle up, would i be able to set the idle on the pfc myself or would i need to take it to the tuner to get it done?

i know i may be off track but is there anyway i could set the idle manually to drop the idle on cold stop to maybe around 1400-1500, 1700-1800 is pretty loud at 6am mornings :-? even if its only for about 3-4mins.

Thanks man 8)

If you remove the extra idle up the ECU should keep it around 1400 on startup and quickly drop to 1100 or so till it warms up.

If the idle speed is still too high you can set it on the PFC and then adjust the idle screw on the Idle Control Valve until it matches the rpm you've set.
It will usually take a few goes to get right.
