I'm trying to find someone who has experience welding cast iron as i want to ghetto mod my stock rb manifold so i can mount an ex gate. I just can't justify spending more money on a proper manifold but i really need an ex gate to control my turbo.

I know there was someone at the dyno day who had a modded SR manifold but i can't remember who or if they even browse the forums still.

Does anyone know of a welder who has done it before? Prefer sydney but can post the manifold if required or travel.

cheers

Dave

I know that now!

I never expected the IW to be so useless at controlling boost. Garrett need to be punched in the dick.

from what i have seen an read, while i have seen cast iron welded wastegates, "v8killa" was the car that had it done

but i would have thought the heat would be too intense in a small area causing it to crack and splinter, maybe something like oxy welding with cast iron welding rods or even maybe tig welding of some kind, with the manifold emmersed in sand or heating the entire manifold or something like that?

i was also thinking of getting a stock mani and doing this to it, hence why i had the link, i have access to a mig and oxy at work, but still not 100% on the whole heating and cooling yet...

not worth getting a cheap mild steel manifold or something and doing it to that or getting one with it already attached??

yeah, cast welding is a total PITA. I certainly wouldn't want to try it on a turbo manifold, you could amost guarantee that you'd get cracking around the new welds in short order.

the best option for using a std manifold I could think of would be to machine (i.e. grind on a surface grinder) a flat onto where you want to mount the external gate, and then make a cast adaptor to be drilled and tapped onto the manifold at that spot.

personally,I'd take the steampipe route and make something up from scratch.

created motorsport's in melb welded a diff flange to my std manifold.. from what i gather to aid the process you need to heat cast iron HEAPS for the weld to be any good, prior to actualy welding on it....

dave try the fab section on sau, there's some switched on fella's that read that section.

that was me at the dyno night.

red s15.

external gate on a stock manifold, running a 3071 t2. had the same boost problems.

the welds are holding up fine, no issues.

the guys name is sonny 0412 035 703, he now works from power tune in fairfield. works from powertune not for them. he pretty much works 7days.

cheapest route is to trial fit where u want everything and just take him the manifold and turbo (provided u are supplying the external gate)

pm me if u need more info

I'm not sure how you can think somebody wrecking their car at the racetrack is funny. Perhaps you need your head examined
