Hi All,

I have been reading for some time on all the different turbo options available to the S15.

Assuming we are talking about an S15 with all the regular bolt on's (FMIC, TBE, Boost, Engine Mgt etc).

I'm a little confused with all the different names these turbos have and was looking for those in the know to help clarify..

If we are only talking about the below turbo's - In rough order from small increase to larger increase we have:

HKS 2530 (prob missing some letters)
HKS GT2871 (also known as GTRS right)
HKS GT28RS with .64 (I think this is the same as 2860
HKS GT28RS with .86 (I think this is the same as 2860rs disco potato)

Can someone help put them in the right order and also right a brief explanation as to the pro's/cons (e.g. GT28rs .64 - expect about 220-240rwkw's with good spool and good for track, lack top end unless cams installed)

So bloody confusing haha

Thanks

Seems like you have a few of the models mixed up in that list. To give you a proper answer, i'd really need to know the intended purpose of the car. You probably don't want to know too much specific stuff as you will end up confused and have trouble making a decision.

I'll give you a rundown of the stuff I know (Ive owned quite a few different model turbos):

HKS GT2510 - This the smallest 'bolt-on' HKS turbo for SR. They are pretty rare and dont make much more than 220rwkw, but are stupidly responsive.

HKS Options

HKS GT-SS - This is very similar to the GT2510. Again quite rare, but really responsive.

HKS GT2530 - In my opinion this is the best turbo for a standard internalled SR20DET. It has the ability to make around 230-235rwkw at around 20psi. You will be getting 17psi at about 3200rpm. For circuit, track or street it is fantastic.

HKS GT-RS - This is suitable if you have forgies or want to test the limits of the stock SR. You can stretch this up to 255-260rwkw at 25psi. The down side is that you will lose a fair bit of throttle response compared to the GT2530, so you get punished coming out of corners.

HKS GT2540 - This turbo is a nugget. Avoid it

Garrett Options

Garrett GT2860R -This is effectively a ballbearing version of the S15 turbo. Its good up to about 215rwkw and quite reponsive

Garrett GT2860RS (GT28RS) - This one is what is known as the 'disco potato' (when mated to 0.86 exhaust housing). It is an excellent choice for a stock internalled SR as it is almost identical to the HKS GT2530. It is capable of around 230rwkw and has excellent response

Garrett GT2871RS (There are 6 different variations that I can think of - 3 front trim options and 2 exhaust housing options)
The front trim options are 48, 52 and 56. Generally speaking, the larger the number for a given turbo frame, the more power it will make.
This frame turbo also has 2 exhaust housing options - 0.64 and 0.86
The version that has 52 trim front and 0.64 rear is identical to the HKS GT-RS. The power potential ranges from 240rwkw for the 48trim, up to about 260rwkw for the larger 2 options. Obviously the larger you go, the more response you lose

Garrett GT2876RS. These turbos are crap. Stay away

Dont forget the trust options too. They make a nice turbo

Thank you sooo much TMB!!

Makes much more sense now haha :) (opps.. I named them HKS but they are Garrett lol)

So for my requirements - want a weekend/track car which does a bit of everything from street, 1/4 to wakefield (hard to please I know)

so far the list of other components are:

- complete suspension upgrade (c/o's, sway bars, camber, castor etc)
- semi slicks with light weight rims
- R33 gtr brakes
- cut 100kgs of weight (if I can)
- FMIC, oil cooler, Engine mgt, fuel upgrade, injectors, cams (not too aggressive), maybe some internals to strengthen
- cooling - oil, radiator etc

Pretty much want something I can turn the wick up for 1/4 mile but then turn boost down for track!

I guess for me I would go for either HKS GT2530 or Garrett GT2860RS (what is the difference by the way)

My goal is a very low 12 sec pass and somethign that gives those cheating evo's a run for their money!! (by cheating I mean AWD electronics hehe)

Cheers
Rob

Sorry to but in on this but u say that the Disco is responsive with the 0.86 housing?
Everyone i know that has an 0.86 housing on a standard internalled SR says its a lag monster... what do u reckon?

Also with the GT2871 52 trim and 56 trim.. How much potential power difference are we talking here and how much response do u lose between the 52 and the 56 trim...
Alot of people seem to opt for the 52 trim over the 56 trim for some reason..
cheers

You are right actually. I should have been more specific and stated that the 0.64 option is the one to get on this turbo. Apparently the 0.86 housing is ok if you get retuned to suit (ie run more timing through the midrange)

There isn't much power advantage in going for the 56 trim over the 52 trim. The reason for this is that even the 52 trim can flow more than the exhaust side can, so upping the comp wheel isn't going to make much difference as the rear can only flow so much.
Many experts even say that the 52 trim comp wheel is too big for the exhaust wheel

The disco patato is the most commonly reffered to turbo used as a near stock option upgrade to sr's

Cool thanks for the clarification.. I presume that the 56 trim would affect response as well? seems like if you opt for the 56 trim its almost like the GT3071 right?

The 56 trim might have similar reponse to the 3071, but it definately doesn't have the flow potential. The exhaust wheel holds it back

One more question :)

in reality I'm looking for something I can turn the wick up every now and then!

If that be the case, how would you rate the GT2871RS with a 48 trim & .64 housing? What are we talking about with lag here? Will I be seeing 1 bar before 3500rpm??

Sounds like it is a small step above 2530 and GT28RS..

Cheers

I have the hks gt2530 on one of my cars and the Garrett GT2871RS-48trim with 0.64 exhaust on the other, and although the 2871 makes more power, the car with the 2530 feels significantly quicker

those hks2530's are from what ive been told have better housing/flow potential to the closes garret equivlent therefore making it feel alot more punchy for similar or a tad less power, i reakon this guy should be in the market *depending on budget* for a 2530 or the 28rs smaller housing option, somewhere round the 230rwkw range should be able to run a 12 with good tyres and a deccent driver, aswell as having good punch out of corners. which is what this guy seems to be after.... my 2cents
