I have done some reading on certain turbos and want peoples opinion i have been looking at HKS and these 25-30, 2535, 28-35. I am after something different i don't want the over rated GTRS looking at 400hp turbos that respond well and comes on early ( under 4000rpm) any stats are more than welcome and personal experience, and your thoughts on HKS vs Garrett. This is for a s15 that will be a street track project thingy

The GTRS is overrated in what way? Trust me when i say you wont need any more than that for the traffic light grand prix.

things that are popular usually are for a reason. GTRS's are the in-thing because they work very well when the supporting work is there to complement them.

anything from that size and down is going to give you full boost before 4000rpm,so it's really a choice of how much prep work do you want to do in addition to bolting a turbo on,and what your desired output is.

I think the best turbo for a standard internalled SR is the HKS 2530. I've had almost all the T2 flanged turbos on various cars over the years and find the 2530 to be my favourite so far

To make the most out of the gtrs, it needs a decent amount of boost which means you need forged pistons if you want the engine to last long

The Garrett GT28RS is almost identical to the hard to source HKS 2530 and I agree with the post above that it would be very good choice.

However the GT28RS has a different compressor cover and makes it a pain because its not a bolt on with respect to the intake air intake & outlets unlike the HKS 2530.

as i said i wanted something different which is why i wanted more info on the 2530 which is the turbo i am leaning towards but can't find much info on it. I looked up an old post of Blistc when he was after his turbo and read through that and i am in the same situation the GTRS can max out to early and i want about the 230-250rwkw mark with ease and not stress the turbo or engine much.
TMB how did you find the 2530 what power output did you get and when does it hit full boost

My GTRS has 1.6 bar by 4000rpm. But for a standard engine I agree with HKS 2530 option.

I found that the HKS 2530 on 1 bar felt similar to standard S15 turbo on 1.2 bar.

The gtrs won't max out before your standard engine goes bang, don't worry about that. I made 256rwkw out of the gtrs at the last dyno day. You won't get much more than that out of it though. Stock SR's don't last long at those power levels
The 2530 will run out of puff around the 230-235 mark. I get 1.2bar on the 2530 well before 3500 - more like 3200-3300

and what interanl work do you have with the 2530 i was concidering internals altho it would depend on the neccessity of it and how much power i end up deciding on. So where would a 2535 run out of puff and would that spool up about the same as a 2530

I have no internal work on the engine that has the 2530 on it. It does have HKS step 1 cams though.

Garrett 3071r with gt30 exhaust housing all the way ;) not the cheap option, but should definately be an interesting option.

There is no doubt that the 3071 is a great turbo, but it is pretty useless unless the engine has forgies and preferably rods since you won't be able to make the most of it.
If you are going for 260+ and willing to rebuild your motor with stronger internals, then get the 3071.
If you want a really responsive turbo for the street, without having to touch your internals, get the 2530

ok, looking for some opinions...

if i was looking for a turbo with a lot of bottom end punch, like say in the case of doing like 2nd/3rd gear tight track/twisties/drifting and having the response there as soon as you put your foot down what turbo would you go for, the 2530 or a 2510 or would something like a potato 2860rs or a 2840 do similar (with HKS step 1 cams of course)?

i'm just looking to make around the 200-230 mark at the wheels, i don't think i need any more than that, but i prefer alot of bottom end response to pull me out of a corner quicker compared to top-end pull...

There is a few options that will suit you.

1. If you want to keep your manifold and ex gate, i'd be looking for a td05-16G. That would be a gun turbo for your requirements and would be minimal effort.
2. If you are looking to turf the td05, then i'd be looking at gt2860rs (disco), hks 2530 or even the gt2871rs-48trim.
I currently have hks 2530 and it smokes 2nd gear when boost hits (~3500rpm) but pulls right through to redline. I think its probably the best turbo available for up to 230rwkw. The problem is that they are a little hard to come by. The disco is only a poofteenth smaller though
