I read in my old hpi mag, which of course I cant find, that an old style soarer (maybe mz something?) owned by the editor I think put his car on the dyno and after increasing the boost made improvements with the air fule ratios.
From memory it went down from being excessively rich.

Can my cloudy memory be correct, and is this the case with all turbo cars with standard ecu, or does that have nothing to do with it?

It's probably quite common on factory cars with slightly increased boost.
Over rich factory fuel settings plus more boost equals better ratios.
Sounds logical to me.
However it's also possible that since the ECU is seeing more air it puts in more fuel to.
So the ratios might be the same as they were before you put the boost up.
It's very crude anyways, if you want really nice AF you will need a tune of some kind.

PS these are poorly edumacated guesses ;)

lol, so increase boost it until the fuel pump and/or injectors cant handle anymore, therefor making it run leaner...:P hehe

if i boosted my old car above factory boost it would go into "full rich mode"...and if u unplugged the factory boost controller and did it ...it would run even richer again...

what oricle said, it shouldnt go leaner unless either the fuel pump or fuel injectors are maxing out, the airflow meter would detect an increase in airflow and would adjust fuel flow to accomodate the extra air and keep a/f ratios steady.

the only exception to this is, that the extra airflow will mean the ECU will be running on different 'cells' on its fuel maps, and this will give a different a/f ratio. this is common on our cars, but it doesnt end up leaner, it ends up being richer for what i would assume is safety since your not in a factory state of tune anymore.
