if it's cheap and in good condition it could be worth a try.

It may be super laggy and not make any power, but then you can just put an HKS sticker on it and sell it for a profit :P

Lol, yeah but looking at it as it stands it appears that it could be a good thing.
I guess being a garrett with a T25 flange that fitting it won't be to hard.
Ok i'll get the bastard and we can examine it more closely with verniers when i get it :).

I reckon it could work quite well actually, at worst you can always get a .64 housing from garrett if it turns out to be too laggy.

I've sent the guy a PM, we'll see what happens.
While on the topic of turbos can you tell anything directly from the CHRA tag or it just a part number and i have to referance it elsewhere to find out info on the turbo?
I can't really find much on the subject...

It's just a reference that you have to use to look up the details elsewhere. From the link to ray hall's website which andrew posted we can see that it's ball bearing, uses a 60 trim 60mm T3 comp wheel (same as factory T28) and an NS111 turbine wheel (same as GT-RS, 2871, disco etc)

Fair enough, the whole number doesn't match though, which parts of the number are relavant to the type of turbo?

I'll try to be careful with my terms here as that can cause confusion.

Most tags will have three numbers on them, a build lot number, a CHRA number and a turbo id number. The build number is production info so will be able to be used to find out where/when the turbo was manufactured. The chra number defines the core so will tell you what wheels and bearing is used. The turbo number tells you exactly what turbo it is so it also defines the housings that were used. The chra number is always a garrett number however the turbo id number will relate to whoever is selling the turbo. Eg HKS will put on one of their part numbers, nissan will use one of their numbers and garrett will use one of their numbers.

While it would be nicer to see the tag it certainly looks like this turbo was sold by garrett with a turbo id number of 471024-5003. The important numbers are the first ones as they really tell you what turbo it is. The second group of numbers will define "options" such as the divider between turbine and wastegate, bolt pattern etc. To know _exactly_ what turbo it is the best bet is to call garrett but the numbers you've been given certainly match the pictures

So the number '471024' is the important bit as it defines what the turbo core is. So the wheels on this turbo will be
The housings etc could be changed (ie change from 0.86 AR housing for NS111 wheel to 0.6 AR housing for NS111) if need be.
So reading from what dumhed posted the 471024 core will have the following:
60 trim compressor
1.83/2.37 wheel diameters (in inches i presume)
0.60
33 compressor flow (in lbs?)
76 trim turbine
1.85/2.12 wheel diamaters

The rest of the spec is variable by changing housings but those numbers above are fixed for that core right?

I'd take 471024 as being the turbo ID actually, this is what is listed on the ray hall site and the specs do match the housings. The 2.12 turbine wheel is the NS111 and that certainly appears to be the wheel shown in the pictures (9 blade vs the older style 11 blade) and the comp wheel looks at least in the right ballpark. The 33 is lbs/min, for comparison a standard T28 flows 31lbs/min so this will be a small increase, I'd assume from the freer flowing rear.

Actually, it's not a GTiR turbo is it?

Nah it's not, the specs are very similar at a glance though.
The GTiR turbo bears a passing resemblance to a S14/15 turbo with the bolt on flanges and whatnot, however the housings are actually different in the details, especially where the wastegate can bolts on.
The seller got an inkling the turbo might be worth more then he had it up for and just jacked his price up, he's selling it as a 2860RS now (although according to what we worked out here the compressor wheel isn't quite the same as the 2860RS).
Ah well back to trying to find a normal GTiR turbo or similar.
