Hi Guys,

I'm looking to upgrade from the stock cooler to an FMIC, the prices are good these days and fitting i know isn't that hard, only thing is I won't have the cash for a PFC and dyno-tune for a good 6-months after the FMIC is installed.

Now what I've been wondering is if I go and install the FMIC without getting a tune afterwards, how does that affect the car? Can i safely run an FMIC without a tune? I raise this question because i've heard that it can stuff up my air/fuel ratio or something along those lines.

If anyone can clarify that would be ultra handy.

Also, post installation of FMIC what sort of performance gain/drop can I expect (before you ask I'm thinking Hybrid GT FMIC), boost drop/gain? I know there might be a bit more lag but i've been told this depends on the size of piping (a mate suggested 2.5inch on the hot side and 3inch on the cold?).

Thanks in advance guys.

Cheers

P.s. if this has been covered before please provide a link to the post as i did a search and couldn't find the answers i was after

you dont need a tune after putting on a FMIC.

You should notice a little bit more power, because the air getting into the engine is colder. However there will be a little bit more turbo lag (it needs to fill the volume of a FMIC and larger piping before hitting the throttle body).

I think your mate is thinking you have a huge turbo personally...
I have 2.5" piping on hot and cold side of the FMIC, and its too big! There is noticeable lag on my tiny t25. Im changing the hot side back to stock piping (2") to slightly alleviate this problem.

I thought the hybrid kits came with their own hot and cold side piping anyway, so you dont have to worry about anything. :)

wat if ya had a pfc, got it tuned with a small front mount, and then changed to a bigger cooler and new pipework, would you suggest a tune then?

i'd suggest a dyno run to see how the a/f ratios are with the cooler intake temp, but it prolly wont need a massive change in tune. you could probably get away with it until you have more mods and really need the tune (ie with cams or something)

actually sl11de it does and i have a dyno reading to prove it the previous owner of my car bought one from livo exhaust and then got a real one the power increased 15kw and so did torque a considerable amount

so power and torque considerably improved just from switching from a copy to a genuine hybrid front mount? no other changes to boost or anything? did the copy have a gaping hole in it? or a rag stuffed in the end tank?

not doubting you, but i find those claims extremely hard to believe

I call bullshit.

Sorry mate. Put a genuine hybrid bar and plate side by side with a china copy and try and spot the difference. Then measure pressure drop across each, then measure the efficiency of each back to back. The difference doesn't equate to 15 rwkw at the sort of power most street driven s15's make. If you are talking about the new hybrid GT tube and fin coolers then maybe, as even hybrid claim gains over their old bar and plate cores, but then we aren't comparing apples with apples are we?

i don't think livo sell hrbrid but at the time they didn't and yeah it was a bar and plate there was nothing wrong with the design they told him it was a hybrid cooler to. Hybrids design is more advanced than most and for your info dude hybrid is chinese so bad call there Dave. Obviously if you put one side by side you'd have no idea until you put it on but the difference is obvious with the dyno reading. And you know what i can't find it but hybrid have one

back to the point, fmic won't require tune as people have said, power wise you can run more boost to accomodate for the slight loss in response.
