Really need to pull my finger out on this exhaust system before the Laser runs out of rego, so I figure I will try kill 2 birds with one stone and go the new turbo at the same time.

I noticed on NS that inabox is offering Garrett GT2871 with a 52 Trim. This is supposedly the same as the HKS GT28RS. How much difference do you think there would be between a 52 Trim and the current 56 trim with a .64 housing?

How much earlier on boost?
how much less top end?

You mean HKS GTRS

I think the 56 trim comp wheel is too big for the exhaust side on this turbo, especially if you get the .64 housing. The 52 trim is much better matched.

Probably 500rpm earlier for full boost. I would be surprised if you see any real difference in top end as i think the exhaust side will be the limit on it before the comp side will become a problem. It runs the same exhaust side as the 52 trim.

To get an idea of what the 52 trim can do, look here

If you think you need any more top end than that, you are pulling yourself

I would also say that you'll most likely find this turbo too laggy for your liking.
You'd be better off with a GT2530 or Disco Potato since you're running an internally standard engine and don't want it to end up laggy.

Thanks guys,

TMB I realise I am sacrificing top end for response, but as you correctly point out if I need more than that I'm having a lend. Fortunately I am aiming for a much more conservative power figure.

I was originally looking at the 56 trim but since a 52 is now available from Garrett that is in between the 48 and 56 I thought this would be a fair all round compromise.

Apperently this is the same spec as the HKS unit, which they say is very drivable.

Dumhed, I figure any larger turbo is going to be a trade off but I thought this might sit between sensible power and a lag monster.

I have just deposited the money for the Turbo so hopefully should have it early next week.

Personally I think the extra lag isn't worth it for the 10kw or so you'll gain right at the top, but if you do some more to it later on you'll be able to make power power.

Apperently the 2871 with the 52 Trim is the same configuration as the GT2535 but with a 2" hose clamp outlet. So hopefully it won't be too laggy. I gave Morrie a call before and I'm getting the exhaust HPC as well which should keep temps down and improve spool time ever so slightly.

It may be only 10kw up top but it's night and day through the midrange andrew. As anthony mentioned the top end is limited by the exhaust so the actual experience when driving is somewhat different to what the final number suggests.

That said, that looks a bit soft coming on boost anthony

I downloaded the spec from both HKS and Garretts web sites. There is the odd .1mm difference between them but the GT2871R with the 52 trim is nearly identical to the HKS GT-RS.

omg- I have been slack and put off doing my exhaust for some time, the reason I have quickly bought the turbo is so I can fit it up with the new steam pipe manifold and exhaust I am getting made from Sureflow.

Since any changes to the exhaust manifold / turbo combo will require new intercooler pipes, I figured I may as well try only do it the once. Another reason for the sudden purchase before my Laser runs out of rego.

You mention night and day difference through the mid range can you elaborate on that.

The new turbo turned up on Friday, it is smaller than I thought it would be, it doesn't appear to be any externally larger in size than a stocker.

nup, it's not.

It's still a T2X turbo, so the core and exhaust housings are pretty much the same.

The compressor housing is larger, and when you take the old one off you'll notice that the T28 has a much larger compressor inducer than the T25G.

If you want real facts OMG & TMB are the guy's to speak to!!!

I have a GTRS on my S15 & I have experienced the 2871 52 trim 0.64 A/R . The difference is the response / midrange. I would say the GTRS has 20 to 25kw more at 3500 to 4000 rpm.

my 2cents
