I noticed when fitting my braided lines to my turbo on the weekend that all the nipples were imperial, well at least the hex part of them was, so im just wondering is garret an american brand? and could all the threads throughout the turbo be imperial?

ok, i got the right bolts, but only 3 screw in, the other 2 threads are crossed of damaged?

what should i do?

i can either leave them out, may leak though or i thought i might be able to drill out the first part of the tread and use the thread thats back further in the housing, as the bolts i got are 10mm longer than the previous ones, so the thread back there should be fine.

let me know what you think i should do

you need a thread tap. you can get them from hardware stores and i think repco have them too!

yea i thought about that but i jsut thought that would mess it up more, because i have to get it started on the right thread, and the one closest to the top is the wrong one.

If everything fails will it be ok with only 3 bolts? the ones that dont screw in are next to each other btw so thats not ideal

probably not good with only 3. 4 as a minimum. mine had only 3 for a while when it was stock. and i never knew.

as for re-threading it, i dunno thats up to you, but id be doing it. its cast iron so its pretty tough

Will it be ok with only 3 bolts? NO if it was ok with only 3 bolts Nissan would have made it with only 3 bolts.
Dude if your going to do things your self do them right. Tapping a hole isn't very hard too do.

i know its not hard, but what im worried about is the first half of the thread is wrong (where the owner screwed a different bolt in) and the second half is right, if i was to start tapping it would take to the first part of the thread, and continue tapping, overriding the thread further down, then i may have no thread at all

If you override the thread lower down, then why would you have no thread left?

Thats probably because the bolts you took out were a mix of different pitches. I'd think that they aren't crossed, rather that the wrong pitch stud has been forced into it and recut the thread which isn't difficult as cast iron is pretty soft compared to high tensile steel.

I'd accept the fact that you have some odd sized nuts and studs and install it as is knowing that you will probably never touch it again.

Alternately, if the turbo is out of the car and you can get a good look you can drill out the stuffed section of thread and leave the decent bit intact.

yeah there were 3 different types of bolts used..are they usually studs rather than bolts in the turbo?

the turbo is out of the car atm. i dont want to put the old ones back in as they are really rusted, and too short. when i checked the old ones to see what pitch they were with a thread pitch guage some of them i couldnt even find a guage to fit, both metric and imperial..weird

I just wished the previous owner had used the right ones! it isnt that hard

Nah, i just tend to replace all mine with new studs after having a bolt snap on me first time i decided to remove the dump on my car.

Your only other option would be to drill and helicoil them.
