Without getting super technical or getting hung up on "the best turbo" debate, can someone please give a brief overview of the common turbos on the market.

What I am looking for is a back to back comparision comparing the key features i.e cost, BB or plain, lag, power etc.

I currently have a T25 and I am looking at the Garrett GT28R/RS
I am looking to see how the other turbos fit around these two and what represents the best value for money.

Just found this great link in one of the other threads http://www.driftcentral.com/content_tur ... nfo=ttable
but it doesn't give me a real world comparision.

I have a better idea. How about you tell us your power goals, what mods you plan on having and what you plan on using the car for. You will only get useless responses without telling us that info

I have had quite a few turbo combos over the years:

T25G
T03/T04 hybrid
HKS gt2540
S15 aus spec
S15 Jap spec
Trust TD05-18g (T518Z)
HKS GTRS

So far my favourite is the TD05-18G (i only just got the gt-rs so i'll reserve judgement till it is set up properly)

well personal opinions based on personal real-world observations (just as TMB has done) are the best comparisons around. What good is a whole stack of technical mumbo-jumbo if the turbo is an ugly bucket of poo?

What if it's an ugly bucket of poo but works really well on your engine and meets all of your expectations? I have one of those :)

The reason I asked for back to back comparision was more a case of not having years of turbo experience behind me, by trying to work out the different characterists a specific turbo has. I then can go to that list and see if there was a common trait to that characteristic.

I have been thinking about it I would be happy with anything above 220rwkw.

Planned mods are:
ECU: Haltech E8 (already fitted)

Intake manifold: K&N pod filter (already on) noisy sucker but I am going to build a box for it. cheapish FMIC with decent pipes, Cheap Greedy knock off (already fitted) lost me power but picked up drivability.

Exhaust: CES Dump pipe, Catco 3" metal Cat, Quite 3" rear exhaust (unknown at mo) steam pipe or cheap ss manifold (see how budget goes)

Turbo: probably the Garrett GT28RS (I think they are going for around $1250) Will spend more if it gets more low end torque.

Internal: See how external goes first but maybe cams / head work

you'll def need cams for ~220rwkw..

that turbo and that setup (with cams) should get u a nice reliable 220rwkw at not crazy boost levels.. i know that the GT28RS comes in two A/R sizes tho, but i cant remember which one is for bigger power.. maybe the .86? (how good is my memory? someone correct me if i'm wrong)

The GT28RS will get you to 220rwkw, but you will need cams a probably 1.2-1.3bar. 220rwkw isn't as easy as everyone makes out, unless you are running a big huffer.

It is a fantastic turbo though, and 220rwkw in an S13 chassis goes quite well..

If you wanted the same power at less boost (like 1bar), you will need to look at something like the GT2871 (which also comes in a variety of forms)

0.86 is the larger housing, therefore more power but loss of response

What I am looking for in a turbo is good bottom end torque at low revs, I will sacrifice some top end power for bottom end but not too much.

Also value for money is important as some of these turbo are crazy prices. So cheap enough to get the job done but not too cheap that you have to spend the money a second time.

im interested to hear how different these 2 turbos were to you
i recall reading someones experience saying there isnt much difference at all

lets us know your impressions of the GTRS when its up and running, i just recently installed a gt2530, i'll post how that is when its tuned in 2 or so weeks

For those people pushing 220rwkw+, with aftermarket cams + turbo, is there any head porting and polishing done?

I dont hear of it mentioned that often, but wouldnt its bang for buck value deem it as essential especially at this power level?

There was virtually no difference between them on the road. I would even say the Oz one was 'perkier' down low.
I had both on the dyno and the basically followed the same line all the way through the revrange.

I will be roadtuning the GTRS car (200sx) tonight. I will only be going to 1bar for now as the knock sensor seems to be buggered and I don't want to risk damaging the engine.
I think the gtrs will really shine on 25psi... but i'll let unigroup do that part of the tune when i have more $

Its not really necessary at this power level. If you saw the ports on an S13 SR20 head, you would understand - They are damn nice for a factory casting.

Its not very good bang for buck as to port a head, you first have to remove it, dissassemble it, get it ported, buy new headgaskets etc, reassemble, then retune. You would be lucky to get any change from $1500

Hahaha, the above line brings a grin to my face.

Anything over 1.3 bar and above with the GT-RS, you will find it difficult to hold that boost. Let us know if you end up going an external wastegate or something.
