Don't know if it's new technology or not (i believe some diesels use this) but 911 will have Variable Turbine Geometry......in brief.....

"The result should be a single turbo that acts like a twin turbo."

I'll have 2 thanks.....

sounds like a winner!

Are the adjustable fins controlled mechanically (ie by boost levels, exhaust flow etc), or electronically (rpm sensor etc)?

We could be seeing the new, best bolt-on turbo for our SRs soon :D

Variable Vane turbos have been around for years in diesels, but porsche are one of the first few to apply them to petrol engines

What would be the difference between a turbo for a deisel and a turbo for a petrol engine?

I know nothing at all about diesels.

Heat mainly.

Exhaust gasses in petrol engines is hotter than diesel and had a nasty effect on the moving parts in the VV assembly.

Seems they have started using better materials now

Variable geometry turbos are realativly old like the others have said. The ZD30 Patrol has been using one since its debut.

Nissan have experimented with them on several engines but are yet to throw one out into the market.

The vanes are controlled by a conventional actuator that is controlled by a soloinid valve run by the ECU.
They give a far more linear boost curve with seamless transitions.

Nissan have had plenty of trouble with the garret turbos, the ZD30 likes to carbon up the vanes and cause the turbo to overboost resulting in a snapped shaft. Not pretty but they are improving the design slowly.
The vanes in the newer versions are nylon and bakalite which seems to be a far more reliable material.
