Post subject:  BOLT ON TURBO CHARGER QUESTION

first of all, this place rocks. sick sick sick.
i dont know alot about cars, all i know is i want my 180sx to go like a rocket and look sweet.
ive got the externals and interior almost complete.
my question is with any afteramarket "BOLT ON" turbo, is it simply just a matter of just doing that
(bolting on)?
can someone with not much knowledge of cars do this then get someone to tune it?
if so what tools wouild i need, what bolt on turbo would u suggest for a sr20, and what would i need to do once ive done it? (take it where, and get what done)?
besides the actual turbo, is there anything else i need to buy?

First of all welcome to SNSW.

A good cheap bolt on replacement turbo fo a 180sx is a T28 from an S14 or S15. If you can find a jap spec ball bearing unit then that's even better. That should see you to around 200KW at the wheels.

Even though it's bolt on i wouldn't recommend doing this yourself if you are new to this sort of thing. Find a decent workshop and get them to do it for you. Then you can be sure it was all done properly.

Also have you upgraded other things like your FMIC? That would be advisable before you start upgrading the turbo. You want to make sure your supporting sysyems are up to the task first.

bolt on usually means the main parts of the system will bolt together, well most of the time...

it doesnt mean its going to be easy, far from it, there will be little niggly things that will annoy the shit out of you, and you will probably find you have to make many modifications to make it work. its frustrating as hell, and the right tools make a BIG difference.

my advice, do as much research as possible, make sure you have the right tools, and put plenty of time aside. things will go wrong, you will want to kill people and blow up your car, but once its done its satisfying :)

Hi, Im about to put an s15 turbo on my 180 SR20det, Is there any hidden mods that need to be done, or is it just a matter of getting new gaskets and changing the turbo?

The oil drain is a different fitting, so if your S15 turbo didn't come with an oil drain fitting, your old fitting won't just bolt on.

huh?

What do you mean the oil drain is a different fitting?

I just took mine of my T25 and put it on a T28 from S15!!

I just installed it and hooked the oil drain hose back up to it.

What does not fit? Have a missed somthing?

That aside, the oil drain fitting on the stock nissan turbos are the same - Its when you get a Garrett T28 that it uses a different fitting.

Youll also need to change your 90' 2" silicon bend to a 45' one (for the compressor outlet to the intercooler piping), and either use a T28 inlet snout, or get the T25 cut and welded at the appropriate angle.

I whole-heartedly recommend getting a set of braided lines, too. It is *possible* to use the stock lines, bending them to make them fit, but its likely to crack the line and then youre screwed.

I also had to get a longer bit of tube for the oil drain.

yup the drains ARE different, and get braided lines because the new turbo wont have the fittings in the same spot. but you can rotate the housing to be pretty close. but i rekon you wont get it right.

other than that, it should just bolt up!

sorry i meant to say on the garrett GT series. i ran into the same problem when i did mine. had to file out the holes larger on the drain to fit the garrett.

Ok I'm confused. I have a T28 from and S15 and its a Garrett.

I have used the oil drain from my S13 T25, and as far as I can tell it fits. If I had one that did not fit, would it be obviouse that it did not? Or would it bolt up the same , but not do the same job.

I have found that the S13 inlet elbow for the T28 points down to far to connect the intake back up.

I have also found that the compressed air side of the turbo has a 90 elbow join that does not line up the same either.

I just cant seem to get a straight answer on my oil drain and what is supposed to fit what.
