hey i was just wondering would it make a big difference in using normal steel for my cooler piping instead of aluminium or coz i know steel dusnt dissipate the heat as well coz ive got a 77 corolla and wanna get my fmic on but cost too much so thought of saving money and doin it with steel so i can do it myself!!!!

cheers

here's one hint: what does the factory use?

the piping isn't part of the heat dissipation system. it's there to move the air from the turbo to the core, and then on to the engine, that's it. it's not meant to radiate or absorb heat.
some people go to quite extreme lengths to insulate their piping to further this.

steel or alloy,it's really up to what you prefer. the faster radiating/absorbing properties of alloy will be cancelled out by the extra thickness in the pipe walls compared to steel. alloy will be lighter by a few hundred grams, but you can't weld it yourself in most cases, which means the cost is likely double what steel would set you back. it'll cost significantly more to make up alloy piping in comparison to mild steel.
alloy won't rust, but once painted, mild steel piping won't either, unless you keep scratching and dinging it.

personally,I'd go for steel,as I'm on pretty good terms with an exhaust place, and can get bends and tube in whatever sizes I want for pretty good prices, which I can then cut and weld together myself.
if you can do the same thing, you'd be crazy to sublet the whole job to an alloy welder.

the exhaust shop I use doesn't do intercooler piping for the public anymore,so I'd prefer not to say.
I've been giving them business for 10yrs now,so I get special treatment...

I don't have a car with an intercooler atm. I'd be happy to show you pics of my exhaust system made by them though. dual 2 1/2" stainless from the cats back under an LS400 lexus...

When i was down at the metal shop a few months back there was all these different polished pipes of different diameters and different bends. If you can weld you can go buy whatever you need and weld her up. Thats what im going to be doing when i start modding.
