ive got a standard red top sr with about 0.8-0.7 bar running through it, and when on boost it makes a weird air bleeding noise which is almost like a screamer piepe sound (which i think is normal, just boost bleeding from the bleeder valve). anyway after taking it for a bit of a thrash last night i woke up this mourning and when off boost under load it makes a different spool noise which sounds more tinny (hard to explain) and it doesnt seem to make full boost till just before 4k/rpms. then if i hold it to fairly high revs and get off it it sounds a bit like the turbo has a very slight grinding noise as its winding down or something. am i right in thinking the turbo is on its way out or could it be something else like a slight exhaust leak from the turbo expanding and slightly moving after being heated alot?

yeah thats what my first thoughts were but it doesnt sound like it has an exhaust leak at all when off boost and by the time its on boost you cant hear cos of the bleeder valve. im 99% sure the tinny noise were just the heat shroud, gonna pull it off this arvo, but other wise im still pretty unsure, i was thinking maybe its a slight boost leak or something, any common places to check or should i just go over the entire thing

i had the same sort of noise from mine.
i just jumped to the conclusion it was a blown turbo, so i got a Gt28/71 turbo and fitted it.
When i removed the turbo, never the less, it was just the turbo gasket!
if u do remove urturbo ands its rooted, and u wanna replace it with the original T25, let me know casue mine is near perfect condition.
Good luck.

if its your gasket it will sound like a ten tone truck...(been there)......
but if you are giving it and letting go off acceleratore then you hear like raddeling...more like grinding then most likely is the turbo almost there..................
is it drinking more than usuall after the noise started????
