end of dilemma

it came down to the trust turbo - in the long run it was always going to be better than the GT-RS.

i managed to get the T517z 10cm for 2200 delivered to my door. should be here from japan like next week sometime.

reasons:

1. hks gt-rs = overrated - i just want to know how many poeple who voted for the gt-rs actually have a gt-rs? probably dont, and have just seen the gt-rs group buy and have heard everyone say how good it is. Well it is a good turbo, but for that sorta money there are alot of other options out there with better things.

2. turbo rebuild - i plan to own my car for a very long time, so when it comes down to it, id rather buy the non BB one due to the fact it can be rebuilt for like $600 as opposed to the hks one for $2000 due to it being BB.

3. i chose the t517z 10cm instead of the t518z 8cm becasue it has better response than the 8z 8cm. even though both turbos were the same price, the t517z would be more responsive and come on quicker which is important to me for i will be driving my car every day on the street.

thanks to all for your advice and information. i appreciate the help!

cheers,

mark

From what I have read, the T517z is the replacement for TD05-16g and the T518z is the replacement for the TD05-18g..

Before the T517/8, trust didn't really have a bolt-on turbo for SR... Finally trust realised that is a really really big market they weren't filling and did something about it buy taking a core they arleady had in production, and making some housings for it that suit SR..

I was in this exact same position.
In the end, I opted for the Trust T518Z and put a deposit on one today. I wanted a snappy turbo where I will rarely be cought off boost. They spool as early as a stocker T25G/T28 and are rated at 440hp. They have big mid range and stay on boost right through the rev range. SR20DET's with the right support mods including 555cc minimum injectors, 500HP fuel pump, front mount, good ECU, mild cams, strong internals and some reasonable boost will see around 250kw or so at the wheels without an issue. I know the GT-RS has substantially more lag than this turbo for a fact. THE GT-RS comes on alot later than the T518Z but holds its own later in the rev range. (Been in SR powered cars with similar mods and these 2 turbos)
In the end its what sort of a response you want when you jab the accelerator and not how much you can get what turbo for that should lead you to your decision.
As for how it goes on mycar, I cant tell you till my engine is finished  Big rebuild. 8)

Have you spoken to reputable tuners or even ADVAN about the T517? The T517 is designed for the GTR RB engines.

The T518z is designed specifically for the SR. You saved a few hundred by ordering from Japan, but when that turbo fails or if it is faulty, you will bot have your warranty granted. Since I was spending that sort of money, I opted to purchase through ADVAN for an excellent price only $2900 but 100% backed by warranty and guarantee.

Being a TRUST item, it should be fine, but you never know when ordering stuff from Japan... I have seen some shockers, and yes, Ive been involved in this game for a long time! :D I just like not having a single doubt in my mind when doing such things. Ive been burnt badly in the past and have seen some people get shafted badly also. WOuld hate to see it happen to you.

But that is a great price you have gotten the turbo for. Hope its everything it was designed to be! Let us know how she goes once all done!

oh i 4got to tell everyone... i got the t518z instead

advan will rebuild the turbo regardless where it came from, of course if it is a trust / greddy it is theri specialty. and also, why would they knock back business?

just buying from them seamed like an expensive excersie - put it this way, i got the turbo for 2160, even with a rebuild if something did go wrong, id still be cheaper that $2900

people like advan pay import duty etc. gst and also have to slap their margin on top. Of course i do not blame them for this, they do have to make money at the end of the day to stay open.

i plan to run 190-230rwkw witht hat turbo - hopefully wont be too laggy for me :/

You will rarely be cought off boost with this turbo. It will hit boost around about the same as the stocker, just hat it has big midrange and holds it right through the rev range.
Very popular drift turbo it is due to its snapiness when jabbing the go pedal.

i still visit, i just dont post as much ;) way too busy these days

car was tuned ar CRD

went with the Trust T518z 8cm

made 226.7rwkw on 15psi

its still making the exact same power [well 1kw less] after 1 year, i ran it on the dyno a few weeks back to make sure everything was still checking out

the most power i have made was 249.5rwkw on 20psi on the Hitman Dyno, but i dont know how accurate his dyno was.

a friend of mine has a t518z 10cm and made 281.2rwkw on the CRD dyno with NOS
