G'day,

Just a quick question - what would be better for an s13 if it had a twin turbo engine dropped in it (eg. rb26dett) - would it be better to stay with the twin turbo or go for the single turbo conversion / setup?

Are there any pros / cons to the above?

TIA for the help.

Cheers,
Mark

considering how well the single S15 turbo (or similar) works it'd be har dto justify the twin setup - unless you can get the turbos for free, and make up all your own piping, etc.

I think he meant if you had an S13 with an RB26dett in it..
as an upgrade, would it be better to get a new twin turbo kit or one big single..

not twin turbo the SR

ahh yeah :P

that's what I get for reading while doing work and eating lunch :P

I think it'd depend on how well the engine fits in the engine bay with the twin turbos on it.

I have seen one, and it seemed to fit ok.

Personally I wouldn't put the RB26 in an S13 anyway, but it'd make good power with either single or twin turbo setups.

id go for single purely for cost and complexity
but alot of people are getting good results from twin gt2530's, these setups give good mid range with a heap up top

head off to skylinesaustralia.com, alot of people with gtr's running all sorts of different setups there, lots of good information

if your after flat out power, then go the 26TT.

The Rb26 will make piss easy power, compared to what is needed on an SR.

it'll be fine, just make sure it has plenty of cooling, and don't expect it to handle as well as it could :)

lol^ .... i wouldnt go down this route, too expensive... the way i see it the SR can create alot of power without having crap low and mid range power, to the point where traction becomes a problem, and any more power will just add to it
with an rb26dett, your just going to have more traction problems, its useless for street imo

how seriously does it need cooling?

because i dont want to have it overheating everywhere,

Will i need to cut the radiator support panel to fit a thick alloy radiator in,
or would it be best to run a GTR rad with thermo's
or would it be better to cut the rad support and have the engine fan?

i think i am starting to regret doing this.
No-one told me RB26's run hotter than usual, Doh :(

well, the more power you make the more heat you'll make.

Then there's the fact that the RB is heaps larger than the SR (or CA), so there's less space for airflow - and being an iron block the cooling isn't as efficient - so you need more coolant flow to get the heat out of the engine.

Fitting thermo fans on the radiator is hard to do well. I've seen plenty of RB installations where they get a couple of small thermos in there with about 1cm of space between the fan and the engine - and then they wonder why it overheats!

In my opinion the only way to do it is to mount the radiator as far forward as possible (if you're using a stock one) and put thermo fans in front of it. Use the largest ones that'll fit, and get rid of the air con.
If you have a Silvia rather than a 180 you can get more air into it by swapping the plastic grille for an open style one, which will help a fair bit when there's a front mount cooler restricting the main intake area.

You could probably find an aftermarket radiator that's a bit lower, but fatter so you can mount it under the normal radiator support instead of behind it.
That'd give a fair bit more clearance for airflow to get past the engine and out of the bottom of the car.
