It's never that black and white.

All depends on what you want from the turbo.

If you want a dyno queen then a certain type of turbo might do, but suck on the street when you want drivability.

Can't really help you until you give us some criteria to rate the turbos against.

Firstly however they are both bolt on style low mount (stock position) Jap turbos.

The hks GT-SS is the smallest in the range, and features ball bearings and water coolng.

The trust t517z is not the smallest (some TD05s are smaller) but is similar to the GT-SS. Fromwhat I've seen it's rated a bit higher in power. It is kind of old school onm paper with plain bearings and no water cooling but of course the turbo ahouldn't be judged on that.

Depends what you want it for, but IMO the GTSS is too small, only around the size of an S14 T28, I made 270RWHP on the S14 turbo, have not seen much more with a GTSS and the S14 was all in by ~3100RPM so responsive.

T517Z in the 8CM is a better choice I think, similar lag, bit more power, but for all round, T518Z 8CM is the go for an SR20. Can make ~350RWHP and not a lag pig either, wouldnt go the 10cm though, the extra power doesnt seem to be worth the extra lag.

as mentioned the gt-ss is too small imo, might as well pick up a second hand T28 for alot less, with same performance
